President Issues Major Disaster Declarations for Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Ohio, Delaware and New Jersey

Aaron Skolnik/FEMAThe head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced that federal disaster aid has been made available for the states of Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Ohio, Delaware and New Jersey to supplement state and local recovery efforts in areas recently? struck by severe storms, flooding, mudslides, and tornadoes. In Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey funding will be available to state and local governments and certain nonprofit organizations for emergency work and repair of damage caused by the recent disasters.

Residents of select counties hard-hit by the recent storms may be eligible for grants to help pay for temporary housing, home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses as well as low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration to cover residential and business losses not fully compensated by insurance. Damage assessments are continuing in other flood-hit areas in all states and more counties could be named disaster areas as well. Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures for all counties in these states.
