San Antonio, TX --Disaster recovery officials report a record turnaround time for thousands of property inspections and grant approvals.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) completed more than 6,800 inspections, almost 90 percent of its scheduled workload. Turnaround time in Texas, defined as the time between an application and a scheduled inspection, takes just under four days. The national average runs seven to 10 days.

Homeowners, renters and business owners who suffered losses can apply for assistance by calling FEMA at 800-621-FEMA (3362), (TDD 800-462-7585). "You must apply for disaster assistance before inspectors will view your damaged property," said Scott Wells, who coordinates the joint federal and state disaster recovery effort.

"Even with a disaster of this magnitude, the grant process remains right on track," said Wells. Eligible applicants may receive grants to pay for rent, repairs and various other expenses not covered by insurance. Before a check is issued, damage must be verified. Just two weeks after the federal disaster declaration FEMA has approved more than 5,700 applications for disaster assistance, totaling nearly $11 million.

"We're pleased that the process is working to get those dollars into the hands of Texans," said Duke Mazurek, state coordinating officer. "It is really important to apply for assistance."

To determine eligibility, a FEMA inspector must determine the extent of damage to the house and check the structure to determine what is needed to make it safe and sanitary. The inspection includes damage to any private wells or septic systems, as well as major appliances such as stoves, washers, and furnaces.

Applicants should be prepared to show the inspector their insurance papers and proof of ownership and/or proof of occupancy, if available.
