Houston, TX -- Three 1600 kilovolt-amp transformers will be installed at Hermann Hospital in Houston on Friday, June 29, and Saturday, June 30, state and federal disaster officials said. The hospital lost all of its power during floods generated by Tropical Storm Allison.

Maj. Gen. Hans A. Van Winkle, Deputy Commanding General for Civil Works for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), will tour the hospital and site for the transformers at 1 p.m. Monday, June 25. Maj. Gen. Van Winkle oversees emergency and disaster response missions for USACE.

The transformers - each capable of converting enough electricity to provide power for 107 homes - will supply power to Hermann Hospital for 12 weeks - the time estimated for restoration of the hospital's electrical infrastructure, USACE officials said. The hospital has had no commercial electrical power since its substations were damaged by flooding, USACE officials said.

Soldiers from the 249th Engineer Battalion at Fort Belvoir, Va., and Fort Lewis, Wash., and USACE will install the transformers. The transformers will be "energized" July 5. With the help of these transformers, the hospital will have limited commercial power in two weeks, USACE officials said.
