Houston, TX -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the State of Texas announced that the registration period for individuals affected by Tropical Storm Allison has been extended until Oct. 22, 2001. To date, more than 115,000 registrations have been received for disaster assistance.

"Due to the continued volume of enrollment and applicants who are still being found eligible for some level of assistance, the decision was made to extend the deadline," said State Coordinating Officer Duke Mazurek of the Division of Emergency Management (DEM), Texas Department of Public Safety.

"We want to ensure that all applicants receive the aid for which they may be found eligible, and extending the deadline will allow extra time to pursue all the levels of assistance that are available," Federal Coordinating Officer Scott Wells of FEMA said.

Ray Chatham, Area Director of U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) said, "There are still applicants who have not returned their low interest disaster loan application. It is necessary to fill out and return that application by the Oct. 22 deadline. Those found ineligible for an SBA loan may be referred to a state-run grant program for additional assistance."

Persons who suffered damage from the disaster and have not yet registered are urged to do so by calling the FEMA toll-free registration number at 1-800-462-9029. Hearing or speech-impaired persons may call a TTY line at 1-800-462-7585. Multilingual operators are available for assistance. The teleregistration lines are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., six days a week, Monday through Saturday.
