Severe Weather Forecast for the Northern Plains

Midwest:
Some thunderstorms are forecast for the northern Plains Monday afternoon and evening with some expected to produce damaging winds, hail, and isolated tornadoes.

Several Watches and Warnings are in effect for Monday in the northern portion of the Midwest.

A front will move through the Midwest bringing highs in the 80s-90s.

South:
Scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms will move eastward out of Texas Monday, but continue dropping rain into the lower Mississippi Valley.

Highs will reach the 80s-90s for much of the South. 

Northeast:
The Northeast will experience sunny skies and highs in the 70s-80s in the higher elevations and in the 80s-90s along the Atlantic Coast.

West:
A gradual warming trend is anticipated for most of the Pacific Northwest during the upcoming week.

The Southwest will remain very hot with afternoon highs running in the triple digits.  (NWS, Media Sources)

Tropical Weather Outlook

Atlantic/Caribbean/Gulf of Mexico:
Tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next 48 hours.

Eastern Pacific:
Tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next 48 hours.

Western Pacific:
No significant activity. (NOAA, National Hurricane Center, Central Pacific Hurricane Center and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center)

Earthquake Activity

Over 100 earthquakes measuring 1.0 to 4.0 have occurred in the vicinity of the Kilauea volcano on the Island of Hawaii over the past 24 hours. National Preparedness Level:  2
States Most Affected: Georgia and North Carolina
National Fire Activity as of Sunday, June 17, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. EDT:

  • Initial attack activity: Light (97 new fires)
  • New large fires: 3
  • Large fires contained: 0
  • Uncontained large fires: 7
  • The National Preparedness Level remains at 2, while the Southern Area is at Level 3.
  • Nationally, there is one Type 1 IMT and one Type 2 IMT committed.
