National Situation Update: Tuesday, December 27, 2005

Homeland Security Threat Level: YELLOW (ELEVATED).

National Weather Summary – One More Calm Day

West: Pacific storms in the West will continue. Soaking rain will drench western Washington, western Oregon and northern and central California. The heaviest downpours will target parts of northern California with three to four inches of rain in the coastal mountains. Flood Watches have been issued for southern Oregon and northern California because the continuing rain creates the potential for floods occurring mid-week. Heavy snow will coat the Cascades and Sierras. Locally heavy snow will push into the Bitterroots and mountains of central Idaho by evening. High wind watches are posted from the Washington-British Columbia border to the Oregon-California border.

Northeast: New England will see gusty winds but precipitation will be confined to snow showers or flurries in parts of northern New England. A few snow showers or flurries could dust parts of western New York, western Pennsylvania and West Virginia during the morning. Temperatures will be seasonable with highs ranging from the teens in northern Maine to the 50s in much of Virginia.

Midwest: Rain sprinkles, snow flurries or drizzle (including some freezing drizzle)--will dot the Plains and Midwest tomorrow, but not much is expected anyplace. Temperatures will be on the mild side for the end of the December.

South: Outside of a chance of a late-day thundershower in Arkansas, the South will enjoy dry, mild weather. Highs are forecast to range from the 50s in eastern Tennessee and North Carolina to the 80s in south-central Texas where record highs are possible.  Most of Texas is also under a Red Flag Warning because low humidity and winds gusting to 25 mph winds present the danger of rapidly spreading wildfires. (Source: NOAA/NWS and various media outlets)
