National Situation Update: Monday, December 26, 2005

Homeland Security Threat Level: YELLOW (ELEVATED).

National Weather Summary – Another Calm Day

West: Soaking rain continues Monday from western Washington to central California. Lighter precipitation will reach eastward to western Montana, western Wyoming and northern Utah. Snow will fall in the mountains. Winter storm warnings are posted for the Sierra Nevada, Siskiyous, and Mt. Shasta region; and by late Monday, snow could be falling heavily in the Bitterroots, mountains of central Idaho, Tetons and Wasatch.

High winds in Oregon and Washington caused more than 50,000 power outages early Christmas morning but restoration is already largely completed.

Northeast: Rain showers will change to snow showers (or snow showers will persist) inland and winds will increase. One to two feet of snow, with sleet and freezing rain, are expected over northern Maine; winter storm warnings are posted. Only the eastern two-thirds of Virginia and the Delmarva Peninsula seem likely to escape any sort of precipitation.

Midwest: Light snow showers will dot the eastern Midwest tomorrow, while patchy freezing rain or freezing drizzle will put ice on roads in the Upper Midwest but no large amounts of precipitation are expected.

South: Except for a few rain or snow showers over eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina tomorrow, the South should remain dry but windy.   (Source: NOAA/NWS and various media outlets)
