". . . which purpose is to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wildlife therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such a manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations." - Organic Act, 1916 (creation of the National Park Service)

The following plans are the overarching comprehensive management plans that act as the foundation for park planning and project decisions. These plans provide management objectives and lay the groundwork for future projects to be implemented. Plans at this level include General Management Plans, River Management Plans, and Fire Management Plans.

Each year, Yosemite takes on a lot of planning efforts that result in various types of projects, some as small as unclogging a pipe, and others as large as defining the management of an entire section of a Wild and Scenic River. These plans take on different forms depending on their scope and related impact.

Implementation-level plans are those that lay out the specific project elements for a plan that is derived from a larger guiding document, like those listed above.

American black bear

Did You Know?
Black bears in Yosemite are active both day and night. Most bears that rely on natural food sources are active during the day. However, those that get food from people are often active at night, when they can quietly sneak around and grab unattended food.
