FEMA Approves More Than $1.3 Million for Nevada Snow Removal Projects

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today it has obligated $1,340,545.67 in Public Assistance Program funds to reimburse state, county, local governments and certain non-profit organizations for losses and damages suffered from the record and near record snowfall which occurred January 6 through January 10, 2005.
“With the President’s February 23 declaration these funds became available for the reimbursement of eligible snow emergency costs. Such costs include equipment, contracts and personnel overtime related to emergency services in dealing with the snow,” said Philip E. Parr, federal coordinating officer. “Related emergency protective measures such as sanding and salting were also eligible for reimbursement.”
Frank Siracusa, director of the Nevada Division of Emergency Management and state coordinating officer for the Snow Emergencies, said “Nevada emergency management officials and FEMA provided public assistance briefings to prospective applicants explaining reimbursable expenses eligible under the declarations and how these expenses could be collected and reported to expedite payment. Clearly it was an efficient process.”

Airport Authority of Washoe County; Canyon General Improvement District; City of Carlin; Carson City; Cave Rock Estates General Improvement Board; Churchill County; Desert Research Institute; Douglas County; Douglas County School District; Elko Band Council; City of Elko; Elko County School District; Eureka County; Humboldt County; Kingsbury General Improvement District; Lakeridge General Improvement District; Lander County Public Works; Lincoln County; Logan Creek Estates General Improvement District; Lyon County; Nye County; Oliver Park General Improvement District; Pyramid Lake Piute Tribe; Regional Emergency Medical Services; Regional Transportation Commission; Reno Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority; Reno Sparks Indian Colony; City of Reno; Skyland General Improvement District; South Fork Indian Reservation; State of Nevada Buildings and Grounds; Storey County Emergency Management; Story County School District; TE-MOAK Housing Authority; Truckee Meadows Community College; University of Nevada at Reno; Washoe County; White Pine County Road Department; City of Winnemucca; Yomba Shoshone Tribe; Zephyr Knolls General Improvement District.
FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and effectively manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
