FEMA Approves Funds For Public Assistance

San Juan, PR -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved $1,221,377. to the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico under the Public Assistance (Infrastructure) Program to reimburse fifteen (15) municipalities and eleven (11) government agencies for providing emergency protective services following the May 6-11 flooding and mudslide events.

"We are approving these funds, as soon as possible, to quicken the work of the municipalities and government agencies, and reimburse them for expenses incurred during the flood event," said Federal Coordinating Officer Justo Hernández.

Under the disaster Public Assistance Program, the declared areas may be eligible for a 75 percent federal share reimbursement of the approved costs incurred in emergency protective measures, debris removal, and the repair, replacement or restoration of flood-damaged public facilities, such as roads and bridges, buildings, parks, water control facilities and utilities.

Moreover, funding may also be provided to repair damaged facilities owned by certain private, non-profit organizations, including educational, medical, and custodial institutions, utilities and certain other private, non-profit organizations that provide services of a governmental nature to the general public, such as day-care or senior citizen centers. Following is a list of the municipalities and government agencies with the approved amounts, as of today.

"Public Assistance officials continue in the field verifying damage reports, evaluating the applications, and providing accurate information and advice to other municipalities, public agencies and qualified non-profit organizations about the scope of the program," said Hernández.
