Louisiana Disaster Housing Assistance Tops $10 Million

Baton Rouge, LA -- More than $10 million in disaster housing assistance has been provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for those affected by Tropical Storm Allison, June 5-22.
"We are pleased that we have been able to provide so much aid to Louisiana residents," said FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer Bill Carwile. "The inspection teams have really been working hard to keep the process moving." There are currently 71 FEMA inspectors in the field and almost 13,000 inspections have been completed.
The disaster housing program provides several types of assistance. Homeowners or renters whose residences were destroyed or substantially damaged may be eligible for rental assistance to help pay for a place to live until permanent housing can be found. Assistance for essential home repairs also is available to homeowners for basic repairs not covered by insurance to make the home safe, sanitary, and secure. Examples of essential repairs may include electrical and plumbing systems, as well as general carpentry to make a home safe and secure.
Over 18,600 Louisiana residents have already registered for federal disaster assistance through FEMA's toll-free number, 1-800-462-9029. TTY service is available at 1-800-462-7585 for the speech- or hearing-impaired. Recovery specialists will be available at these numbers from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., CDT, seven days a week, until further notice.
