Tazewell, VA -- Disaster officials announced the first 59 critical-needs grant checks are ready to go out to individuals and families suffering uninsured losses in the July 8-10 flooding in Tazewell County. The initial grants, totaling $252,646 were approved under the state-administered Individual Family Grant Program (IFG). The aid program provides immediate emergency assistance to those individuals in disaster areas who do not qualify for low-interest loans administered by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
Under the IFG program, grants are awarded to disaster survivors to meet necessary expenses or serious needs arising from the disaster such as:
- Personal property losses;
- Flood insurance premiums;
- Transportation;
- Reimbursement for damage estimates;
- Medical or dental expenses;
- Funeral expenses.
The IFG program is not intended to cover all disaster losses or to purchase items or services generally considered nonessential, luxury or decorative. Following referral by the SBA, applicants considered for the IFG Program are quickly notified by the state regarding their eligibility for the program. More than 100 applications referred to the IFG program in Tazewell County are currently under review.
