LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Starting today, teams from the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are circulating throughout Arkansas to help evacuees register with FEMA and understand the individual assistance process.

The 14 two-person teams will visit local shelters on a regular basis. Half of the teams are assigned to shelters in eastern Arkansas; half will visit shelters in western Arkansas. Team members will make contact with every shelter on a daily basis. The amount of time they spend in each shelter will be based on the need for services there.

Evacuees wanting to meet with the FEMA representatives should contact the local shelter manager who will facilitate access to the team. Evacuees who have not applied for FEMA assistance but no longer live in shelters can go to the closest shelter to register.

Evacuees with access to a computer are urged to register and to track the progress of their application online. Applicants seeking to update their contact information or check on the status of their application also can call the helpline at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) then select option #2.

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
