Seattle, WA -- Governor Gary Locke has once again proclaimed September as Weather Radio Awareness Month in Washington, encouraging all citizens to "increase their knowledge and awareness of the benefit and use of the NOAA weather radio before, during and after a natural or man-made disaster." FEMA Regional Director Ken Kasprisin couldn't agree more.

"NOAA Weather Radios are an important component of all family and business disaster preparedness plans and kits, and calendar observances like Weather Radio Awareness Month are effective vehicles for getting the word out, " said Kasprisin. "The concept of early warning, and timely updates of dangerous weather can save lives and reduce loss, and is easily expanded to all-hazards events."

NOAA weather radios broadcast information 24 hours a day, with special alarms when severe weather threatens. September observances include weather radio manufacturer customer incentives, awareness material for schools and the emergency management community, and special presentations of weather radios to rural King County schools.
