Emergency Response Teams Will Join Industry to Evaluate Corpus Christi Hazardous Chemical Response Plans

Denton, TX - Is Corpus Christi, Texas ready for a chemical spill? We are about to find out. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the State of Texas, and the City of Corpus Christi will evaluate local response hazardous materials incidents.
For months, local officials have refined and developed emergency response procedures. Fire, law enforcement, medical staff and local industry will join in a two-hour exercise of the plan on Wednesday, September 19. FEMA Region VI will direct the evaluation using a national program called CHER-CAP (Comprehensive Hazmat Emergency Response - Capability Assessment Program).
Exercise players are from city, county and state governments, private business, and volunteer organizations. They include fire, law enforcement, medical staff and refinery company personnel. Peer evaluators will evaluate the players' activities. Local residents will play mock victims.
The public is welcome to observe the exercise at the Koch and CITGO refineries and at the Christus-Spohn Memorial and South hospitals.
