JACKSON, Miss. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA’s) Blue Roof Program provides free assistance to storm victims in disaster areas through the installation of rolled plastic sheeting on damaged roofs, thereby helping to protect property and allowing residents to remain in their homes.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who have been tasked with this assignment, are still collecting right-of entry forms for FEMA and urges those who need the temporary roofing to sign up as soon as possible. Winter weather will make home repairs difficult and, although the program has no set closing date, the Corps will cease taking right-of entry forms in a matter of weeks.

In order to qualify for a Blue Roof:

Before work can begin, the property owner must complete a Right of Entry (ROE) form to allow Army Corps of Engineers roofing teams to assess the property and assign the work to a Blue Roof contractor.

The Army Corp of Engineers has more than 300 contract crews completing over 1,000 roofs each day and has already covered 35,000 Mississippi roofs.

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
