FEMA Awards $1.7 Million To Kentucky For Hurricane Relief

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved a $1,751,700 grant to the Commonwealth of Kentucky to provide interim housing and shelter for Hurricane Katrina and Rita evacuees dispersed throughout the state.
The Urban County Government of Kentucky estimates 150 families will benefit from the grant for a period of two months up to a maximum of 12 months. The terms of the leases are for three-month increments with the potential for recertification based on need. The estimate also includes all related costs such as utility deposits, utilities and essential furnishings.
FEMA awarded the money to the state under its public assistance program. The funds are allocated as actual expenses occur.
“The Commonwealth of Kentucky has been doing an excellent job of providing assistance to Hurricane evacuees,” said Paul Fay, federal coordinating officer for the five Region IV states hosting evacuees. “This grant will reimburse those agencies and organizations as they continue efforts to provide safe, secure, and sanitary housing for the evacuees.”
FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
