FEMA Reimburses Fort Worth, Plano, San Antonio And Bell County $14.4 Million For Housing Katrina Evacuees

AUSTIN, Texas -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Securitys Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awarded $14.4 million in public assistance grants to the State of Texas to reimburse the cities of Fort Worth, Plano and San Antonio, and Bell County for interim housing and temporary sheltering of Hurricane Katrina evacuees from the Gulf Coast.
These recent grants cover the costs for transportation, unit rental and furnishings projected for a three-month period.
The federal funds are made available under FEMAs Public Assistance Program. State and local governments are designated agencies that provide services to evacuees from Hurricane Katrina and are eligible for 100 percent reimbursement for costs associated with:
- mass food, shelter and essential transportation for evacuees;
- overtime pay for law enforcement to ensure public safety and property protection;
- emergency operation centers;
- emergency medical care; and
- certain emergency-related school costs.
