BATON ROUGE, La . -- Numerous medical clinics and hospitals in Orleans , St. Bernard, Jefferson and Plaquemines parishes damaged by Hurricane Katrina and Rita have now reopened. Each facility has been assessed by the Department of Health and Human Services as able to support public health needs. The facilities are listed below.

Residents with emergencies are urged to go to urgent care clinics first in most cases. The clinics can handle most emergencies and can quickly determine if a patient needs to go to a hospital and, if so, arrange the transfer. Using the hospitals for routine needs or even most acute cases can overwhelm them and delay treatment, according to officials.

Mobile Disaster Medical Assistance Teams (DMATs) continue operating in some areas, and an additional DMAT has been set up in St Bernard Parish. Modular clinics currently being assembled in St. Bernard are expected to be open in about two weeks.
