Disaster Recovery Centers Continue To Aid Hurricane Victims

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Texas Governor’s Division of Emergency Management are continuing to aid hurricane evacuees at seven fixed Disaster Recovery Centers in Texas and 19 temporary centers in East Texas.

Starting Oct. 10, hours for most centers will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed on Sundays. The centers provide a single location where people may talk face-to-face with recovery specialists.

Disaster assistance may include grants to help pay for temporary housing, minor home repair and other serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance or other sources. Low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) also are available for residential and business losses not covered by insurance.

The following federal and state fixed Disaster Recovery Centers are open until further notice:

Galveston: Island Community Center, 4700 Broadway, Galveston 77551.
Hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday; closed Sunday.

Smith County/ Tyler City: 2301 South Broadway Ave., Tyler 75701.
Hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday; closed Sunday.

Houston: Greater Houston Area DRC, 6059 South Loop East, Houston 77087.
Hours: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday; closed Sunday.

Austin: Greater Austin Area DRC, 825 East Rundberg Lane, Suite E, Austin 78753. Hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday; closed Sunday.

San Antonio: Kelly Air Force Base, 280 Robert Dover St. Bldg. 1537, San Antonio 78266. Hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday; closed Sunday.

Dallas: Dallas Convention Center, 650 Griffin Street, Dallas 75202.
Hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday; closed Sunday.

Fort Worth: Amon Carter Exhibit Hall, 3401 Burnett Tandy Drive, Fort Worth. Hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday; closed Sunday.

Temporary Disaster Recovery Centers also are open at 19 locations in counties directly impacted by Hurricane Rita. Starting October 10, all will be open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed Sunday. Some temporary sites may move to other locations within a county. Those new sites and other temporary centers will be announced later this week. People should visit the Disaster Recovery Centers if they want information; calls are not taken at the sites.

Representatives from local, state and federal agencies, and voluntary organizations are staffing the Disaster Recovery Centers. No cash, checks, debit cards or vouchers are distributed at Disaster Recovery Centers. Visitors can:
