BATON ROUGE, La. -- In the turmoil that accompanies the shock and loss of a disaster, misleading rumors, half-truths and misunderstandings about available assistance may cause some hurricane-struck residents to miss out on much-needed help. The goal of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the State of Louisiana is to get help to everyone who is eligible.

Recovery officials are concerned that unreliable word-of-mouth in distressed neighborhoods and communities may deprive eligible individuals and households of vital aid from the State and the FEMA. "The last thing you need in a disaster is misinformation," said State Coordinating Officer Colonel Jeff Smith. "And the best way to avoid that problem is to call and ask for yourself just what kind of assistance is available to you."

Residents who suffered damages and losses as a result of the hurricanes can apply for assistance immediately by calling 1- 800-621-FEMA (3362) . People with a speech- or hearing-impairment can call (TTY) 1- 800-462-7585 . Both lines are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week until further notice.

FEMA and the State clarified some of the most common misconceptions:

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.

Small Business Administration loans are the primary source of federal long-term recovery and cover uninsured or underinsured losses for personal property damages and real estate damages. After applicants have registered for disaster assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, SBA loans are offered to individuals and businesses with an ability to repay them.
