$179 Million Approved For Evacuee Care In Five States

ATLANTA, Ga. -- More than $179 million in emergency funding has been approved by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide care for victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita who have been evacuated from Gulf states to areas in five southeastern states that are part of FEMA’s Region 4.

The FEMA emergency care will provide food, shelter, clothing, medical and dental care and other needs designed to help displaced victims of the catastrophic storms reach a level of safe, sanitary and functional living while they are away from their damaged homes.

The states of Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee have received 75,435 Katrina and Rita evacuees. Based on the location of their application to FEMA for assistance, the chart below shows to what extent these states have accepted evacuees from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Texas and the federal funds provided for their care.

State and local governments and designated agencies that provide services to evacuees from Hurricane Katrina are eligible for 100 percent reimbursement for costs associated with:

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
