Baton Rouge, La. - The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in conjunction with other federal agencies, continues to support recovery efforts for Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
- Nationwide, more than 900,000 households affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have received FEMA assistance totaling more than $3 billion. To register, call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY); or registering on line at www.fema.gov.
- Close to 400,000 Hurricane Katrina applications for transitional housing have been approved for a total of $1 billion.
- There are 83,718 evacuees of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita spread out in shelters in 19 states and the District of Columbia. This is down from a high of 273,000 evacuees in shelters.
- A total of 77 Disaster Recovery Centers are operational in four states (Alabama-11, Mississippi-17, Louisiana-27, Texas-20, and Florida-2). Disaster Recovery Centers are available for disseminating information and to allow individuals the opportunity to meet face-to-face with officials regarding disaster assistance. No cash, checks, debit cards or vouchers are distributed at Disaster Recovery Centers.
- More than 80.2 million liters of water; 168 million pounds of ice; and 40 million meals have been delivered to victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003
