First Disaster Assistance Dollars Flow To Texans Hurt By Dolly

McALLEN, Texas -- Disaster assistance dollars are already flowing to help the Rio Grande Valley recover from Hurricane Dolly.
As of close of business Monday, nearly $2.7 million has been approved in federal/state disaster assistance for residents of Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy counties. The money is intended to assist in meeting the immediate housing needs and replace lost personal property.
"We are beginning to see much needed help for Texans," said State Coordinating Officer Frank Cantu.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Texas Governor's Division of Emergency Management (GDEM) have been working in partnership before, during and after the storm, coordinating both the emergency response and recovery efforts.
"We have FEMA staff on the ground and in our call centers ready to help Texans apply for disaster assistance," Federal Coordinating Officer Sandy Coachman said. "Community Relations field staff have been distributing flyers in communities and, with our state partner, we have three mobile units supporting Disaster Recovery Centers."
To date, FEMA has recorded more than 12,700 applicants. More than 700 people have visited the three recovery centers.
