Charleston, WV -- The West Virginia Office of Emergency Services and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will hold two mitigation events and offer mitigation materials to home supply stores within the diaster-affected counties.

Mitigation representatives from FEMA will be on hand to explain mitigation techniques that can lessen damage to homes, businesses and property from any future flooding. Brochures will be available on the National Flood Insurance Program and written materials on mitigation techniques such as retrofitting and elevation.

The community effort to help residents of disaster-affected counties get the information they need on mitigation techniques will begin on July 29, 2003 at the Hager Supply Co., in Lincoln County. A mitigation specialist will be available from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Another event will take place in Nitro on July 30, 2003 at Lowe's from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The following stores will have mitigation information available to those interested. The public may drop by and pick up informative materials (while supply lasts) during store hours.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
