Clarification Notice: The Deadlines To File For Unemployment Assistance Are Different From The Deadline To Apply For Federal/State Assistance

Disaster Unemployment Assistance is intended to help those who live or work in disaster-declared counties whose jobs were affected by the storms beginning on June 11, 2003 and who would not be eligible for help under the regular unemployment program. This program is funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and administered by the West Virginia Bureau of Employment Programs.

Claims for Disaster Unemployment Assistance must be filed with local unemployment offices by July 25, 2003 for persons living or working in the following counties: Boone, Cabell, Kanawha, Logan, Mason, McDowell, Mingo, Putnam and Wayne. For those who reside or work in Berkeley, Lincoln and Wyoming counties, the application deadline is July 31, 2003. Residents of Nicholas and Monongalia counties have until August 14, 2003 and Doddridge, Harrison and Ritchie county residents have until August 18, 2003 to file unemployment claims.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) continues to receive applications for federal/state disaster assistance programs. The deadline to apply is August 20, 2003. West Virginia residents who suffered storm damages between June 11 and midnight July 15, 2003 can be considered under this declaration and should call the FEMA toll-free teleregistration line at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585. Lines are open from 8 a.m.to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday until further notice.
