Charleston, WV -- Following the severe storms, flooding and landslides that battered the State of West Virginia from June 11 through July 15, many residents are facing the job of cleaning up and removing storm debris. State and federal recovery officials urge those who need to cleanup and remove debris to do so immediately.

"It's not necessary to wait for an inspector before cleaning up," said State Coordinating Officer Stephen S. Kappa. "Our top priority is to make sure everyone has safe, functional housing, and leaving storm debris lying about property could pose health risks."

Those who suffered damages can begin immediately to remove storm debris from their property and start cleaning up and making repairs. Individuals still waiting for a home inspection from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) should keep the following advice in mind when cleaning up and removing debris:

Anyone who sustained flood damages or losses and who lives or works in a disaster-declared county, may register for assistance by calling FEMA's toll-free teleregistration line at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, until further notice. Anyone who has already applied for assistance and who has questions about their application should call the same number to reach the FEMA Helpline or visit a local Disaster Recovery Center.
