Charleston, WV -- Disaster recovery officials urge residents of West Virginia counties affected by the recent severe storms, flooding and landslides to be cautious when handling food and water exposed to floodwaters.

"As people work to clean up and rebuild, personal safety should be their first concern," said State Coordinating Officer Stephen S. Kappa. "Where food and water are concerned, we like to say, 'If in doubt, throw it out.'"

Those who rely on private wells are encouraged to have their water supply tested if any of the following conditions exist:

Residents who observe any of the above conditions in their well water should contact their local health department to request water sampling instructions. They should also avoid drinking water if they cannot confirm its purity.

Contaminated food can also be a problem following a storm that results in flooding. All food should be inspected thoroughly; and, those packed in foil, cellophane, paper, cloth or cardboard, as well as all perishables, should be discarded. Even if the contents seem dry, they may not be safe.

Officials recommend that residents prepare for emergencies by having items on hand that don't require refrigeration. Shelf-stable food, boxed or canned milk, water and canned food should be a part of a household's emergency food supply. These items should be used and replaced from time to time to ensure quality and freshness.

Residents and business owners living in Berkeley, Boone, Cabell, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Mason, McDowell, Mingo, Monongalia, Nicholas, Putnam, Wayne, and Wyoming counties are urged to call the toll-free teleregistration number, 1 800 621 FEMA, to apply for assistance. People with hearing or speech impairments can call (TTY) 1-800-462-7585 for assistance. Lines are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, until further notice.
