Charleston, WV -- State and federal officials have announced that Cabell County, already eligible for Individual Assistance (IA), will receive Public Assistance (PA) as well, and Nicholas County will have IA added to the PA it is currently eligible for.

On June 21, at the request of Governor Bob Wise, President George W. Bush issued a disaster declaration. It will now be possible for both homeowners and business owners in Nicholas County to apply for a wide range of state and federal disaster assistance programs.

Counties declared for IA may apply for temporary housing assistance and housing repair, U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans for individuals, renters and businesses to repair or replace damaged property, disaster unemployment assistance, and grants for serious needs and necessary disaster expenses not met by other programs.

The counties declared for PA may receive help for emergency work such as debris removal and emergency protective measures; or for permanent work including repair of roads and bridges, water control facilities, buildings and equipment, utilities and parks, recreational facilities and other public items and places.

If you live or work in a disaster-declared county and suffered damages to your home or other losses, call the FEMA toll-free teleregistration line at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the speech- or hearing-impaired. You may call from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday until further notice. Each application is handled on a case-by-case basis.

Applicants for IA should have the following information ready when they call:

The counties declared for IA and PA are Boone, Cabell, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Mason, McDowell, Mingo, Nicholas, Wayne, and Wyoming. Berkeley and Putnam are eligible for IA only. The total number of counties participating in the declaration is 13.
