Frankfort, KY -- Kentucky residents in 20 counties who had damage from severe storms between June 14 and June 27 may be eligible for disaster assistance.

On July 2, President Bush declared the severe storms, flooding, mud and rock slides, and tornadoes that occurred during that period a federal disaster, making residents in the following counties eligible for grants, loans and other assistance to recover from storm damage: Boyd, Breathitt, Carter, Clay, Elliott, Floyd, Greenup, Harlan, Johnson, Knott, Lawrence, Leslie, Letcher, Lewis, Magoffin, Martin, Owsley, Perry, Pike and Rowan.

This is Kentucky's second disaster declaration in less than four weeks. The earlier June 3 declaration enabled residents in 37 counties to apply for assistance if they had damage from storms that hit May 4-27.

The counties included in this earlier declaration are: Anderson, Boyd, Breckinridge, Boyle, Bullitt, Caldwell, Carter, Crittenden, Elliott, Estill, Fleming, Garrard, Graves, Grayson, Greenup, Hardin, Hart, Henderson, Hopkins, Jefferson, Jessamine, Larue, Lewis, Lawrence, Madison, Mason, McLean, Meade, Mercer, Nelson, Owsley, Perry, Rowan, Union, Washington, Webster and Woodford.

State Coordinating Officer CharlieWinter emphasized that those who suffered damage in the counties declared for the May storms still have time to apply for assistance. "The deadline is August 4," Winter said.

Eight counties declared for the May storms were also hit by severe weather in June and included in the July 2 disaster declaration. The counties are Carter, Elliott, Greenup, Lawrence, Lewis, Owsley, Perry and Rowan.

Federal Coordinating Officer Scott Wells said that residents with damages from both storms may apply for assistance twice. "

Those with damage from either disaster period - or from both - are urged to apply for assistance through FEMA's special toll-free telephone number, (800) 621-FEMA. For hearing- or speech-impaired individuals, the TDD number is (800) 462-7585.
