Volunteer Organizations In Alaska Work Together To Respond To Disaster Needs

Anchorage, AK --A group of Alaska volunteer organizations will meet in Fairbanks July 23 to learn about providing long-term assistance to families and individuals who may have un-met needs following a disaster. The FEMA-led workshop will focus on how the volunteer organizations can coordinate their efforts to meet those needs.
The meeting will be held Tuesday, July 23 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Salvation Army Headquarters, 1602 10th Ave., Fairbanks.
"It's not uncommon for families or individuals to have un-met needs following a disaster if they do not meet the standard requirements for assistance," said Dennis Hunsinger, FEMA deputy federal coordinating officer.
"There are a wide variety of reasons for long-term recovery needs and the spirit of volunteerism continues long after the initial emergency recovery operations are over," said Jim Butchart, Alaska state coordinating officer.
The presentation will guide the group toward forming a committee that will focus on the four C's, said Dick Balnicky, volunteer agency liaison for FEMA Region 10. "The four C's stand for cooperation, communication, coordination and collaboration," he said. "We will look at disaster timelines, the sequence of disaster assistance programs and which ones are available and a review of the roles of the various volunteer groups," he said.
Agencies expected to attend the meeting include The American Red Cross, The Salvation Army, Adventist Community Services, Second Harvest Food Bank, Mennonite Disaster Services and United Way of Tanana Valley. The Fairbanks North Star Borough Emergency Operations Department will also be participating.
