Alaska Spring Break-Up Victims Can Apply For Disaster Assistance

Anchorage, AK --A special toll-free telephone number is in operation for people affected by the spring break-up flooding of April 27 to May 30 to apply for disaster assistance. The number can be used to register for a wide range of state, federal and voluntary disaster assistance programs, according to federal and state officials.
Those affected by the spring break-up flooding may apply for assistance by calling the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) toll-free number at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The hours of operation are 8 AM to 6 PM Alaska time seven days a week. Hearing or speech impaired individuals may call TTY at 1-800-462-7585.
"We urge homeowners, renters, and businesses to call and apply for assistance," said William Lokey, Federal Coordinating Officer for response and recovery efforts. "Any individual or business who was affected by the disaster should really take that first step in the recovery process."
President Bush designated several jurisdictions eligible for aid, including the Fairbanks North Star Burough. The disaster designation opens the way for a wide range of federal and state disaster assistance.
"There are many programs available for homeowners, renters, and businesses," said State Coordinating Officer Jim Butchart. "I strongly urge persons affected by this disaster to call the FEMA toll-free number.
The federal declaration allows residents and business owners to receive federal aid to cover home repairs and other disaster related expenses not fully compensated by insurance or other assistance programs. The U.S. Small Business Administration also offers low interest long term loans to homeowners, renters and businesses of all sizes.
