AUSTIN, Texas -- Feb. 28, 2006 is an important date for individual and business taxpayers affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. It is the deadline to complete time-sensitive federal tax actions whose original due dates were postponed by the IRS to give victims of the hurricanes time to overcome the initial impact of the disasters.

Federal tax actions with original deadlines falling between the time of the hurricanes (Aug. 29, 2005, for Katrina in Louisiana ; Sept. 23, 2005, for Rita in Louisiana and Texas ) and Feb. 28, 2006, are due no later than Feb. 28, 2006.

Business and individual taxpayers that received financial assistance from federal and state government entities or charitable organizations generally need not report the assistance as income for federal tax purposes.

For information about which tax returns and payments are due by the February deadline or to determine if particular money received for hurricane relief is taxable, contact the IRS at its hurricane hotline, 1-866-562-5227 . The IRS telephone number for hearing impaired individuals to call for assistance is 1-800-829-4059 for those with TTY equipment.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
