Five More Hurricane Ivan Disaster Recovery Centers To Open

CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- State and federal officials announced the opening of five new Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) to bring flood recovery field officers and programs closer to people in need of assistance. The five new centers in Brooke, Hancock, Kanawha, Marshall and Wetzel Counties will be in addition to one already operating in Ohio County (Wheeling).

The Disaster Recovery Centers will be open seven days a week, from 10 a.m to 7 p.m. until further notice. Opening Tuesday, September 28, are these three centers:

Brooke County

Wellsburg Fireman’s Hall, 1121 Yankee St., Wellsburg, WV 26070

Hancock County

Millsop Community Center, 3420 Main St., Weirton, WV 26062

Kanawha County

Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 6823 Sissonville Dr., Sissonville, WV 25320

Opening Wedenesday, September 29, are centers in:

Marshall County

Delf-Norona Museum, 801 Jefferson Ave., Moundsville, WV 26041

Wetzel County

New Martinsville City Hall, New Martinsville, WV 26155

The Ohio County center is at 56 16th St. (Old Social Security Building, Wheeling, WV 26003.

Federal and state disaster recovery officials encourage citizens to register for disaster assistance by calling the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA’s) toll-free number 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The phone lines are open 24 hours a day seven days a week until further notice. Persons who are hearing or speech impaired can register by calling TTY number, 1-800-462-7585.

People in need of disaster assistance can go to any FEMA Disaster Recovery Center in their area, whether in a neighboring county or state.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
