A Disaster Recovery Center Opens In Wheeling On Saturday, October 25, Replacing Mobile Unit

CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- State and federal officials announced the opening of a Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) to replace the mobile DRC that opened in Wheeling last Wednesday to handle inquiries following the Hurricane Ivan federal disaster declaration.

The mobile DRC currently located at 16 Street and Main in Wheeling will close on Friday, September 23 at 7 p.m. The new DRC opens on the following day at a nearby location.

The location and hours of the DRC follows:

Location: 56 16th Street
(Old Social Security Building)
Wheeling, WV

Opening Date: Saturday, September 25

Hours: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily

Federal and state disaster recovery officials encourage citizens to register for disaster assistance by calling the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA’s) toll-free number 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The phone lines are open 24 hours a day seven days a week until further notice. Persons who are hearing or speech impaired can register by calling TTY number, 1-800-462-7585.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
