BATON ROUGE, La. -- Federal, state and voluntary agencies are continuing to work together to help Louisiana residents recover from the effects of Hurricane Ivan.

On September 15, the President issued a disaster declaration for Louisiana, providing disaster assistance to individuals and households in Jefferson, Lafourche, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. Tammany and Terrebone Parishes; to State and local municipalities for debris removal and emergency protective measures; and for actions to prevent or reduce long term risk to life and property from natural hazards in the storm-affected Parishes.

Recovery services summary at close of business September 23, 2004

September 16 – The Louisiana National Guard set up distribution points for ice and water in St. Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes.

September 19 – Four Disaster Recovery Centers opened where people can meet face-to-face with federal, state and voluntary agency representatives, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday –Saturday, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday until further notice.

Homeowners, renters and businesses are welcome to visit any of the disaster recovery centers, but everyone who sustained loss or damage is encouraged to apply for assistance first by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the hearing and speech impaired. Telephone lines are open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week until further notice.

September 21 – Applicant’s briefings were held with municipalities in thirteen parishes eligible for federal assistance to state and local governments for debris removal and emergency protective measures.

September 26 – Disaster Recovery Centers in Orleans and St. Charles will close at 6 p.m.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA’s continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
