ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- North Carolinians who have been affected by Tropical Storm Frances are encouraged to call the toll-free number for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) (or TTY 1-800-462-7585) to register for disaster assistance.

If the wait is long, please remember that there are others affected by on-going disasters around the country also calling to register for assistance. The number is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until further notice. Because of the high volume of calls during the day, the best time to call is between midnight and 8 a.m.

If you have trouble getting through when calling, be patient. Don't get discouraged. FEMA operators are there to assist all who have been affected by Tropical Storm Frances.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
