CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- The Town of Daisy, in Logan County, will be the site of the fifth and final temporary mobile home park, according to federal and state disaster officials. The site was located through the efforts of local citizens who responded to a request from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for suitable park locations.
Construction will begin September 4, with completion tentatively scheduled by September 30. The park is located on Route 10 north of Daisy, and will be known as Winchester Estates. It will house 40 families initially, but is being designed to accommodate an additional 15 mobile homes if necessary.
According to Suzi Cowie, FEMA Human Services Officer, “The park is a short-term housing solution for those in critical need, including people now living in homes that are not safe, or with family members.” FEMA officials consider travel trailers and mobile homes to be interim or temporary housing, and make them available for up to 18 months or until permanent housing plans are completed within that time.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA’s continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
