FEMA's Helpline And Disaster Recovery Centers To Close For Presidents' Day Holiday

SAN JUAN, P.R. -– The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Helpline and the Commonwealth/ FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2004 in observance of the Presidents' Day holiday, indicated Commonwealth and federal disaster recovery officials.

However, FEMA's toll free Helpline and the DRCs will resume operations on Tuesday, February 17, 2004. The Helpline, 1-800-621-3362 (TTY: 1-800-462-7585, for hearing or speech impaired individuals), will be available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The DRCs will be operating on Tuesday, February 17th, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., until further notice.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
