FEMA Extends Deadline to Register for Disaster Assistance

WICHITA, Kan. -- Kansas residents who suffered damage as a result of the tornadoes, severe storms and flooding from May 4-18 will now have more time to apply for federal disaster assistance. Following a request by Governor Kathleen Sebelius, officials at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) extended the individual assistance application deadline to August 4, 2007.
"We were very near the July 5 deadline," said Michael L. Karl, federal coordinating officer in charge of Kansas disaster recovery operations, "But we were still getting applications from individuals affected by the disaster so we extended the deadline."
FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) will continue to accept applications from individuals in declared counties who experienced damages from the May 4-18 storms and will renew efforts to identify and reach individuals who may not have registered.
Individuals can call the toll-free registration line at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585. Operators are available Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. CDT or register anytime online at www.fema.gov.
People who lived or worked in the 21 counties approved for individual assistance who did not yet apply should contact FEMA now. These counties include: Barton, Clay, Cloud, Comanche, Dickinson, Edwards, Ellsworth, Kiowa, Leavenworth, Lyon, Osage, Osborne, Ottawa, Phillips, Pratt, Reno, Rice, Riley, Saline, Shawnee and Stafford.
Individuals and business owners may obtain SBA information by calling toll-free at (800) 659-2955 between 8 am and 9 pm EDT, Monday through Friday, or 9 am and 3 pm EDT on Saturday. Hearing impaired individuals may call toll-free (800) 877-8339. Individuals and business owners may also visit SBA's website at www.sba.gov/services/disasterassistance.
