WINDSOR, Conn. -- Insured homeowners and renters with property damages caused by the mid-April flooding may be eligible for federal disaster aid. Standard property insurance policies do not cover flooding, so many owners or renters may not be eligible for benefits from their insurance companies. The first step toward federal disaster aid is to call FEMA and register.

"We know that a number of Connecticut residents who lost property to flood damage did not have flood coverage," said Federal Coordinating Officer Michael L. (Mike) Parker. "FEMA may be able to help these folks get back on their feet. We urge them to call the FEMA helpline to get their recovery started today."

Available assistance may include financial assistance for emergency repairs and serious losses caused by the April storms. Low-interest disaster loans are also available from the U.S. Small Business Administration for uninsured and underinsured damages to homes, personal property and businesses.

"For those who suffered damage during the April nor’easter, this is the announcement you’ve been waiting for," Governor M. Jodi Rell said. "Help is now just a phone call away. Do it today. Federal officials are here in Connecticut to help you fill out the necessary reports."

To apply for disaster assistance, call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily. Those with speech- or hearing-impairment may call 1-800-462-7585 (TTY).

Registration can also be completed online at www.fema.gov.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
