CLOVIS, N.M. -- Local volunteer attorneys, associated with the New Mexico State Bar Association, will be providing free legal assistance and counseling to individuals affected by the recent tornado and severe weather in Curry and Quay counties.

The legal assistance program for disaster victims is implemented by the American Bar Association’s Young Lawyer’s Division under an agreement with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Available assistance will include, but is not limited to the following –

The first step in seeking this free assistance is to phone the Disaster Legal Helpline at 1-800-876-6657, toll free, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

For other forms of disaster assistance, victims are urged to contact the FEMA registration number, 1-800-621-3362 (FEMA) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 only for the hearing and speech impaired.

FEMA coordinates the federal government’s role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
