One Month Left To Register For FEMA Disaster Aid

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The deadline to register for disaster assistance is May 2 for those affected by the March 1 storms in the seven counties of Coffee, Dale, Dallas, Henry, Jefferson, Montgomery and Wilcox, announced officials of the Alabama Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) and the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
“It is important for anyone who had damage to their personal property or primary residence to register with FEMA. Registration keeps open the possibility of federal assistance if your insurance is not enough to cover your losses or if other disaster-related unmet needs become apparent,” said Gracia Szczech, federal coordinating officer for the Alabama disaster recovery.
Alabama State Coordinating Officer Bruce Baughman urges people not to miss the filing deadline by waiting for an insurance settlement. “Final insurance information can be added to your FEMA application after a settlement is reached,” he said.
Applicants are urged to register for assistance by calling (800) 621-FEMA (3362) 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The TTY number is (800) 462-7585 for those who are speech or hearing impaired. Applicants can also register online at www.fema.gov.
Disaster recovery assistance is available without regard to race, color, sex, religion, national origin, age, disability, economic status or retaliation. FEMA coordinates the federal government’s role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident, initiates mitigation activities and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA works closely with state and local emergency managers, law enforcement personnel, firefighters and other first responders. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
