MILFORD, Del. -- The City of Milford, the State of Delaware, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and local corporate and nonprofit partners today signed an agreement to create a disaster resistant community under the nationwide initiative called Project Impact.

The document outlines activities to be taken by each party to reduce the community's vulnerability to disaster. It also establishes the Milford Project Impact partnership, which can expand to accommodate as many groups and businesses that want to participate.

"Project Impact is a FEMA initiative designed to increase local disaster resistance before disaster strikes," FEMA Region III Director Rita Calvan said.

Officials participating in the signing ceremony at Bicentennial Park included Milford Mayor Joseph "Ronnie" Rogers and Sean Mulhern, Director of the Delaware Emergency Management Agency.

The 436th Airlift Wing Honor Guard from Dover Air Force Base served as color guard. Boy Scout Troop 911, whose members earned Project Impact merit badges, were introduced.

The City of Milford was named a Project Impact site in 1998. Lewes, Bethany Beach and the newly-named Wilmington are the state's other Project Impact communities.
