RALEIGH, N.C. -- Residents of the six coastal counties battered by Hurricane Dennis who suffered uninsured damages from that storm and have not yet applied for disaster aid have only one week left to register, disaster officials announced today.

Storm victims have until 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8, to apply. The toll-free application line, 1-800-929-4062, is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Individuals with hearing or speech impairments who use special keyboard equipment (TTY) may call 1-800-462-7585. The hours of operation for that number are also Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

To be eligible for aid, the applicant must have suffered Dennis-related damages between Aug. 29th through Sept.11th in the Presidentially-declared counties of Beaufort, Carteret, Craven, Dare, Hyde or Pamlico.

Federal Coordinating Officer Glenn Woodard and State Coordinating Officer Eric Tolbert said that residents of the 66 declared counties who suffered uninsured losses caused by the subsequent storms, Hurricanes Floyd and Irene, can continue to register for disaster assistance programs for those damages until further notice.

"The successive onslaught of devastating storms has caused a great deal of disruption in people's lives," Woodard said. "We want to make sure that no one who is eligible gets left out." Woodard said that renters, homeowners or business owners who reside or do business in any of the declared counties may qualify for disaster aid under several federal and state programs including disaster housing assistance, grants to meet disaster-related needs, or U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans.

Tolbert explained that the approaching deadline for Hurricane Dennis has no bearing on registrations for Hurricanes Floyd and Irene because they are separate disaster declarations. "Nonetheless the deadline for Dennis should serve as a reminder that prompt registration is always in the applicant's best interest," Tolbert said.

Both officials stressed that registrants with questions about their applications or disaster assistance programs could call the Disaster Information Helpline at 1-800-525-0321 for further information. The keyboard-compatible (TTY) Helpline for hearing or speech impaired individuals is 1-800-462-7585.
