MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is awarding a $1,030,815 grant to help the Electric Board of the City of Russellville , Alabama bury power lines vulnerable to damage by severe storms.

The grant money covers 75 percent of the $1 ,518,742 cost of burying 8.2 miles of electrical power lines that are at risk because of straight line winds and icing produced by thunderstorms, winter storms, tornado and hurricane events.

“This project will greatly reduce the duration of power outages,” said Stan Houston, mitigation specialist. “Having the lines protected against the range of storms we experience will protect our residents by ensuring that critical facilities, businesses and public buildings will better withstand storms.”

The State of Alabama submitted the grant application on behalf of the city and will administer the award.

The grant is part of FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP), which assists states and local communities in implementing long-term hazard mitigation measures following a major disaster declaration. Among its goals, the HMGP aims to prevent future loss of lives and property from disasters, implement state or local hazard mitigation plans and provide funding for previously identified mitigation measures that benefit the disaster area.
