MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- By year-end 2005, the cost of providing assistance to Hurricane Katrina victims in Alabama had reached more than $519 million. The following pages give a detailed view of the magnitude of the dollar allocations to date. Also see the attached, “Alabama by the Numbers: Year-end Update.”
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Alabama Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) said help was provided to eleven affected counties in the state. They give the break down of disaster assistance as follows:
$116 million in assistance to individuals and families
- More than 35,300 individuals and families received housing assistance totaling $81.5 million, which includes $58.4 million in rental assistance.
- An additional $34.9 million was provided to 29,000 survivors for other essential needs.
$57 million in Small Business Administration loans
- The U.S. Small Business Administration approved $41.4 million in loans to 1,128
homeowners and renters plus, - $12.3 million to 191 businesses and
- $3.5 million in loans to 53 recovering small business owners as working capital.
$346 million was approved for the following
- Public Assistance (PA) approved $73.7 million for infrastructure costs, including $36.5 million for debris removal, $11 million for protective measures such as emergency services and law enforcement, $1.6 million for road and bridge repair and more than $7 million toward restoring public utilities.
- FEMA has approved close to $1.5 million for crisis counseling services.
- Alabama has received $586,000 in Disaster Unemployment Assistance for individuals out of work as a
result of Katrina, and who were not covered by regular unemployment assistance. - The National Flood Insurance Program disbursed $16 million in initial flood damage claims.
- More than $254 million in mission assignments for emergency response, including medical and
health services, the distribution of water, ice, meals ready-to-eat (MREs), and debris removal.
Other disaster assistance:
- 7,406 individuals live in interim housing facilities. Interim housing includes hotels and motels, travel trailers in state parks, travel trailers on commercial and private property and on other FEMA leased sites.
- To date, 112,049 Alabama residents registered with FEMA for assistance by calling either the toll-free number 800-621-FEMA (3362), the TTY number for the hearing- or speech-impaired, 800-462-7585 or by going online at www.fema.gov.
- 40,222 individuals sought services at 31 State/FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs). Services for the aging were provided to 1,954 individuals.
- 256,333 Katrina survivors received food stamps issued by Alabama Department of Human Resources. This represents $29.3 million, received through a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
- More than 3.1 million cubic yards of storm-related debris has been collected statewide.
