MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Hurricane evacuees and displaced Alabamians who no longer need travel trailers provided by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) should notify FEMA to make arrangements to return the units.

Travel trailer residents who live on state park property should call 866-453-9118 to make arrangements to return their units. Residents who live in travel trailers housed on commercial or private property should call FEMA Direct Housing Operations at 251-989-2143.

Residents should call at least one week before moving to set up a day and time when they can be present to complete a move-out inspection and return the keys. The trailer should be in good condition with all personal property removed at the time of the inspection.

“We currently have over 7,000 people living in approximately 2,500 travel trailers in state parks, on commercial and private property and group sites throughout the state,” said Michael Bolch, Federal Coordinating Officer. “These people are gradually finding suitable permanent housing.”

Residents of FEMA travel trailers are responsible for maintaining their trailers, such as keeping them clean, changing light bulbs and smoke detector batteries, and making sure propane fuel tanks are refilled.

Travel trailers are inspected once-a-month for residents’ safety and convenience. If a travel trailer requires maintenance beyond basic upkeep, residents should call the Alabama travel trailer maintenance number at 866-453-9118.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
