One Week Left: Two DRCs Transition to SBA Workshops December 2

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- There is only one week remaining to visit the State/FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) located in Bayou La Batre, Mobile and Birmingham. All three DRCs will close on Friday, December 2. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Two DRCs in Mobile County will re-open December 5 as U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) workshops, assisting people with SBA disaster loan questions.

If anyone has questions or would like to check on the status of his or her application in person it should be done before 6 p.m. on the closing date. Visitors are reminded to have their FEMA registration number and their social security number available.

It is best to register before visiting the DRC by calling the FEMA registration line at 800-621-3362 (FEMA) or, TTY 800-462-7585 for the speech- or hearing-impaired. The FEMA representatives will be able to give the same information provided by disaster officials at Disaster Recovery Centers. The registration deadline has been extended to January 11, 2006.

The two centers in Mobile County will remain open as U.S. Small Business Administration workshops. Their hours will be 9 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday.

The Bayou La Batre center has seen 11, 376 applicants since it opened September 2: the Birmingham center has seen 3,559 applicants since it opened September 23: and the Mobile DRC has seen 4,352 applicants since it opened September 23. More than 38,700 persons visited the 30 DRC locations in Alabama.

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program
