FEMA Disaster Recover Centers Will Be Closed on Thanksgiving

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The joint Alabama Emergency Management Agency and The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, November 24th. The DRCs will re-open Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Normal business hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The locations are:

In Bayou La Batre, at the Bayou La Batre Community Center, 12745 Padgett Switch Rd;

In Birmingham, at Lake Villa, 7916 2nd. Avenue South;

In Mobile, at Tillman’s Corner, Andrews Plaza, 5566 Andrews Rd. Suite A.

Anyone affected by Katrina who has not already registered should do so before visiting a DRC by calling the FEMA toll-free registration number, 800-621-FEMA (3362); for the speech- or hearing-impaired, 800-462-7585 (TTY) or online at www.fema.gov. Telephone lines are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Multilingual operators are also available.

The deadline for registering has been extended to January 11, 2006.

All Alabama DRCs will close on December 2nd.

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages the federal response and recovery efforts following an incident of national significance. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities to reduce the risk of loss in future disasters, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
